Devil in the Details

This week will be remembered as the week people got their excuse to not give a damn about global warming. Emails have leaked worldwide that suggest that some of the numbers on climate change have been juked. Now all the people who were too lazy to push their countries to do anything real about the situation can now view their cowardice as clairvoyance.

Bull.

Predictions are predictions. No matter what the field of science, there’s no way to determine exactly when or how most phenomena will occur. What we do know is that the planet is warming. For all that suggest that this is possibly a good thing (which it very well could be – if you’re not human), may I provide a list of what you’re arguing against:

- cleaner air & water

- renewable and sustainable energy sources

- lessening our dependence on foreign oil and fossil fuels

- creating new innovation that can create jobs and bring better stability to our economy

- ensuring that we do less damage to the planet than previous generations

You don’t have to believe that things are getting worse, but how can you not support initiatives that include the list above? These are results that will benefit the entire world. If global warming was a hoax, it’s the only one I’ve ever seen that is geared toward improving the quality of our environment, our energy sources, our industries, and our lives. Unless Dr. Claw got a conscience for Christmas, there’s no scheme to make the world a better place. There is a demand.

Everything’s not okay. Lewis Gordon Pugh took a swim at the North Pole a couple of years ago. The North Pole. In a Speedo. I guess it was just a little summertime fun.

The polar glaciers are melting and creating a feedback loop that has them disintegrating at a catastrophic rate. But it’s ice – it’s supposed to melt, right?

Is everyone playing fair in the battle over climate change? Not at all. But I cautiously say that I would rather have the human race scared into saving itself than placated into the grave.
